Arrow DreamBox Record on PC Hard Drive (without NFS)

1º download NGrab for windows

Open the users folder, right click on the users folder and select New Users (or Add Users)

Win 2k
Go to the Control Panel - Users & Passwords - Advanced
And hit Advanced on the Advanced User Manager

Put "Password Never Expires" on

3º Share a Folder

Select the folder you want to share.

@X_Splinter
Can you please tell the forum what image you are using this method with and what happens when you hit the blue button after killing the Ngrab process on Windows ?. My DB experience/knowledge tells me that you may have mixed up 2 different techniques for capturing DB transport streams. I would guess that Ngrab plays no part in your actual recording. What seems to me to be happening is that a shared Windows folder is being mounted via CIFS at mount point /hdd and becomes a 'surrogate' hard drive.
Moderators: can someone competent clarify for the benefit of newbies ?.

No im not... In order to Ngrab work you need to set Windows to allow DreamBox to write on the disk... you can do that with NFS Share or you can do that only with windows (thats what im teaching in this toturial)

After that just start Ngrab.

PS: (Blue - 6 - Start Ngrab Recording) means: Press Blue then press 6(plugins) then hit "Start NGrab Recording)

Re: DreamBox Record on PC Hard Drive (without NFS)

@X_Splinter: All of the Enigma based images I have ever run have needed Ngrab to be configured on the DreamBox as well as on Windows, usually in Communications setup where the Ngrab i/p address and/or MAC address have to be specified. Your tutorial shows no Dreambox-based configuration other than a screen shot of the definition of a CIFS share on Windows for use as a substitute hard drive (mount point /hdd). Ngrab does not need "Windows to allow DreamBox to write on the disk". The Ngrab process running on Windows does that not the Dreambox. The Dreambox Ngrab plugin merely 'talks' to Ngrab on Windows which writes the recording away to wherever you have told it in the Ngrab setup on Windows. I suspect now that what you are doing in effect is using Ngrab to record and the CIFS share to playback. If that is so why not use the Dreambox's video recording capability to it's full using your substitute hard drive i.e. the CIFS share and leave Ngrab out of it altogether ?. Clearly what you are doing works for you and you probably expended a lot of effort to get it working but without information about the specific capabilities and requirements of the image you are running I have to say that this 'tutorial' is potentially confusing, especially to new Dreambox users.

Re: DreamBox Record on PC Hard Drive (without NFS)

Dear friends,
I need your assistance in the following matter.
I have a lan at my home, with one DB500s in the living room and one DB500s in the bedroom (both running on Gemini 3.40). On the same netword i have installed a NAS (Network-attached storage) that has its own unique IP address.

The question is, what do i have to do in order to mount both Dreamboxes on the NAS thus being able to record from either of them on the NAS?

Please help.
Thanks and have a nice day.

this is my setup for the dlink NAS

firstly i renamed the unit to nas then

1: i created a user called dream and password was left empty
2: i created a share called movies
3: i set the share and user with full read and write rights

i set the mount on the dream as

1: cifs
2: Directory = movies
3: Local Directory = /hdd
4: Option 1 = rw
5: Option 2 = nolock,rsize=8192,wsize=8192
6: Automount = yes
7: Username = dream
8: password =
9: set the recording on dream as direct file

i then also created a folder called movies inside the share

after you put all that in make sure you save it then reboot the box and check that it did auto mount

Re: DreamBox Record on PC Hard Drive (without NFS)

@fandtm:good stuff - this is exactly what I was trying to get across to X_splinter. If you can mount a network share to /hdd or something like it you don't need Ngrab. This is far and away the coolest method to capture recordings on the Dreambox.
@leshin: you seem to have double-posted your query. Have a look at the other thread for my reply.

I do not have ngrab installed anywhere , the setup shown above is one that i have done i also have set one up for my brother which is a little different but works in a similar manner.

setup

1 x laptop
1 x external HDD
2 x dreams

now what i did was creat a folder on the external drive called movies then within that folder created another folder called movies

with the laptop set the admin login to

user = dream
pass = dream

i then created a share of the external drive on the laptop with full rights

on the dream the setup is

ip : 192.168.1.2 < ip of the laptop >
1: cifs
2: Directory = movies
3: Local Directory = /hdd
4: Option 1 = rw
5: Option 2 = nolock,rsize=8192,wsize=8192
6: Automount = yes
7: Username = dream < login for laptop admin >
8: password = dream < pass for laptop admin >
9: set the recording on dream as direct file

the image i am using is the NEUTRINO you just need to make sure that when you start the comp that you login as the admin.

Re: DreamBox Record on PC Hard Drive (without NFS)

Dear ArchVillan and fandtm,
Many thanks for your prompt replies.

fandtm, can you please confirm that DB500s record and play back recordings from NAS just fine, without breaks??

I will let you know of the outcome within 1-2 days.

Thanks!
