Lightbulb the common symptoms for satellite television troubleshooting on Austar boxes.

Symptom: Nothing is showing on the front panel display. Possible Cause: Decoder not receiving mains power
Suggested Remedy: Make sure that the mains lead is securely plugged into the mains input socket on the decoder's rear panel and that it is plugged in (and switched on, if applicable) at the mains supply. If still nothing lights up on the front-panel display, there may be a problem with the mains supply (check that the power point you are using has power and/or check the fuse box). If these are functioning, there may be a problem with the mains lead.

Symptom: The enhancement light is lit. Possible Cause: The decoder is currently being enhanced.
Suggested Remedy: Wait until the enhancement light goes out - this may take up to 15 minutes if the decoder is being enhanced.

Symptom: You cannot operate the decoder at all using the remote control. Possible Cause: The remote control cannot function properly.
Suggested Remedy: Make sure that you point the remote control directly at the decoder and that nothing is blocking the decoder's infra-red window. Check whether the left most dot in the front-panel display flashes when you press the remote control keys. Check that the batteries are correctly inserted and are making proper contact. Replace the batteries if necessary. If there is still a problem after you insert new batteries, the remote control or the decoder may be faulty.

Symptom: Decoder display is blank, TV screen is blank. Possible Cause: There is no power to the recorder.
Suggested Remedy: Check the power cable is securely plugged in. If this doesn't work, try a different power point.

Symptom: Decoder displays a channel number, TV screen displays one of the following messages:
- "e10 Channel currently scrambled"
- or "Channel not available"
- or "Channel unknown"
- or "Invalid channel number" or "Not Entitled to channel"
Possible Cause: The channel you have switched to is not available to you at this time or you may have been disconnected from the AUSTAR service.
Suggested Remedy: Some services do not run 24hrs a day, so may show this message from time to time (check the Guide for details). Other channels which may appear on the decoder display are not available to AUSTAR customers. You may not have purchased the channel you have tuned to (for example, World Movies or a Pay Per View channel)

Symptom: Decoder displays a channel number, TV screen displays one of the following messages: "Please insert smart card" or "Please insert CA module" Possible Cause: The decoder may have developed a software problem.
Suggested Remedy: Switch the decoder off at the power point, then back on after a few seconds. Wait for the decoder to cycle through its start-up routine, which should take no longer than 30 seconds. If the symptoms remain, switch the decoder off at the power point and check that the CA module is sitting correctly and that the smart card is installed correctly, then switch the decoder back on. .

Symptom: Decoder displays a channel number, TV screen displays the following message: "Parental Lock" Possible Cause: Parental lock has been enabled on the decoder and the programme being shown is locked out.
Suggested Remedy: Parental Lock is used to prevent high classification programme (such as M or R rating) being shown. To change parental lock, refer to the Parental Control facility on the web site.

Symptom: Decoder displays a channel number, TV screen displays the following message "Unknown card". Possible Cause: The AUSTAR smart card is not inserted properly.
Suggested Remedy: Insert the AUSTAR smart card

Symptom: Decoder displays a channel number, TV screen displays a snowy picture, picture is black and white. Possible Cause: The TV or VCR may not be tuned correctly.
Suggested Remedy: Press the Menu button on the remote control. If the menu is also snowy or black and white, the TV or VCR requires tuning. Tune the TV or VCR until a clear menu is obtained.

Symptom: Decoder displays a channel number, TV displays the Information Bar on a blank screen. Possible Cause: The decoder may have developed a software problem.
Suggested Remedy: Switch the decoder off at the power point, then back on after a few seconds. Wait for the decoder to cycle through its normal start-up routine, which should take no more than 30 seconds. If the symptom remains, switch the decoder off at the power point and check that the CA module is sitting correctly and that the smart card is installed correctly, then switch the decoder back on.

Symptom: Decoder flashes "- -", TV screen displays one of the following messages: "searching for signal..." or "no signal". Possible Cause: A severe storm may have cause a temporary loss of signal or your AUSTAR cable may have been pulled out or become loose
Suggested Remedy: Wait for the storm to pass. On rare occasions the storm may not be in your area, but may still cause this problem. If the problem persists for more than 30 minutes and it does not appear to be a storm, call 132 432.
Check the cabling connecting your AUSTAR decoder to the wall socket. If a cable has been disconnected, check the connections diagram in the back of the manual to see where is should be reconnected.

Symptom: The Information Bar flickers or is missing. Possible Cause: There may be an incorrect setting in the Information Bar menu options.
Suggested Remedy: Check the Decoder Settings menu option for Info Box display time. Increase or decrease the setting.

Symptom: Decoder displays a channel number that doesn't correspond with the programme on the TV screen. Possible Cause: The decoder channel number order may have been changed.
Suggested Remedy: You can set your own channel number order on the AUSTAR decoder.

Symptom: Decoder channel numbers change, but the picture on the TV doesn't. Possible Cause: The TV or VCR may not be tuned to AUSTAR channel.
Suggested Remedy: Check the channel settings in the front of the manual, and make sure both the TV and the VCR are tuned to the correct channels.

Symptom: Decoder skips over channel numbers when you press the [+] or [-] keys. Possible Cause: The channel has been skipped.
Suggested Remedy: See "unskip" the channel in your manual.

Symptom: Decoder displays a lower case "r" and a number, TV screen is blank. Possible Cause: Decoder is tuned to a radio channel.
Suggested Remedy: Press the TV button on the remote control (not the TV Guide button). This will change the decoder back to the TV channels. To change back to the radio channels, press the Radio buttons on the remote control.

Symptom: Decoder displays a single dash "-". Possible Cause: Decoder is in standby mode.
Suggested Remedy: Press the power on button on the decoder or remote control.

Symptom: There is no sound or poor sound on AUSTAR channels. Possible Cause: The AUSTAR decoder, TV or VCR may be muted.
Suggested Remedy: Press the mute buttons on your remote controls. Check that all cables are pushed in firmly. (Check the connection diagrams in the back of the manual if any cable has been removed.)

Symptom: Decoder runs hot, TV screen looks OK. Possible Cause: The high speed microprocessors in the decoder make the cabinet warm - this is quite normal.
Suggested Remedy: When your AUSTAR service was installed, the installer would have checked the ventilation to ensure the decoder would operate properly. If you have moved the decoder, ensure that good ventilation is maintained. Do not place the AUSTAR decoder on top of Hi Fi equipment that is warm or hot to touch.

Symptom: The current time shown in the decoder's programme guide is not correct and the programmes do not start at the times shown. Possible Cause: The decoder has not been set up correctly for the time-zone at your location.
Suggested Remedy: See how to adjust the local time in your manual.

Symptom: The whole or a portion of the AUSTAR program you wished to record has not been recorded. Possible Cause: You switched the decoder into standby or to a different channel during the recording.
Suggested Remedy: See details on recording with an AUSTAR decoder.

Symptom: You cannot unlock a changed programme which has triggered your parental lock. Possible Cause: You have not changed the censorship classification to "No Lock".
Suggested Remedy: See details on how to do this and for the four numbers which make up the general PIN. If you have programme which has triggered your general PIN to a personal PIN and have forgotten what this is, contact AUSTAR.

Symptom: You can freely see a programme which you expected to be locked out by the parental lock. Possible Cause: You have not set the parental lock correctly, or have forgotten to reset it (after watching a locked program)
Suggested Remedy: See details on programme access (parental) lock in your manual.
