anyway to turn the hdd off when you run an image from hdd?

I run all my images from the hdd. The only problem is that it does get hot every now and again and although it doesnt effect anything, when i reboot i get alot of clicking and i have to power down, leave it for a few mins to cool and then turn on.

Ive tried with the hdd powerdown settings but nothing seems to work, it powers down and then powers straight back up. Im guessing this is because its reading from the hdd, but is there anyway to sort of put it into standby and have the hdd totally stop? to save it overheating?

That clicking sounds very bad.
I had that once and the hdd had various bad sectors after that.
I had to perform a low level format to get it up and running again.
The only way to prevent these things is adding a powersupply for your hdd.
It's much faster and reliable to buy a usb thumb and put the images on usb.
Then your box will be much cooler and your box will live longer.
High temperatures will age electronic components faster.

Whats the cheapest usb drive you can get. Would a 64mb be sufficient for about 3 images?

Normally, if you don't install to much plugins, no problem.
It should be big enough.
