Help plz: Root Password in PLi® Beryl ?

Is the first time I have installed an image from PLi® and also I was adding some online addons.

When I try telnet login (w/ XP one) appears this text without option to introduce the password:

PLi« DM7000 Beryl 20050920 (based on 1.09.1)
welcome on your dreambox! - Kernel 2.6.9 (21:23:28).
dreambox login: root
login: no valid shadow password

When I try ftp or http login, directly the password (dr.....x) is identified as wrong.

The problem is that I can't access remotely and by now is not possible to use the unix console in the TV to reset it or change it because I am abroad (of course I didn't test before leaving).

Apparently, nobody can confirm if the "by default" root password is "dr....x" or if it is necessary to login in a different way (another telnet client) as in other images.

My doubt is if when I installed the external addons (Apache, Samba, etc, directly from the menues), the known root password was changed or if really in the image is changed.

Anyway, always will be possible change the image, but only when I return home.


Plz, any help will be welcomed (before the change ).

Probably the reason is the firewall, because I didn't modify iptables before leaving:

"A short explanation about how to use iptables:

1. Blue --> services to run --> Start firewall
2. Edit /var/etc/firewall.users. for allowed ip adresses or host names"

When the user is root1, or any other, Pli asks for password, but with root the message is "login: no valid shadow password".

In the http or ftp server the login root is "accepted" but the passw doesn't is.

The installed addons, with option to deinstall (as were said by my partner remotely) are:
hdd_Apache
hdd_base_library
var_internet_movie_dbase
kalibo_5
var_startrek_genisis
var_surfer_3
var_sy5
var_tuxbox_commander
var_bitrate_viewer
var_camd3_800_configfile

The services, apparently, are disabled:
Start firewall
Start crond
Start Apache server

So, if the list of installed applications can't help to solve the question, I fear that will be a question of reset it with the Box commander, in some few days or, unfortunately, change the image.

Well, finally I got access to my DB.

The procedure was resetting the root password, but, the only way is from the TV set directly, through TuxCommander.

I will explain it with some detail, to help anybody with same problem, this procedure reset the root password to get access without it and after will be necessary (recommendable) to create a new one:

1) Install and run TuxBox Commander plugin (Yellow Button in Pli)

2) Change directory to edit /var/etc/passwd (type 4: "Edit")

3) Remove the encrypted password.

3.1) In the file /etc/passwd is the line:
root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/sh or something as
root:EIfidfjeSAEFKEOlasdf5ewr3rWEW:0:0:root:/root:/bin/sh

3.2) the password field is the x or the encripted string EIfidfjeSAEFKEOlasdf5ewr3rWEW

3.3) Delete the x or the whole string. The line now is:
root::0:0:root:/root:/bin/sh

4) Save the file and exit

5) Telnet to your DB with root user without password

6) Change/Create inmediately a new root password with passwd

That's all ..

If I have no way to get TuxCommander on my DM like it was not originally there, or I have no internet access. So, what about replacing the var directory with a fresh copy like when keeping pressing the Up key on the DM7K pannel, when it is rebooting. Wouldn't this actionl replace the passwrd file with an original one (root and dreambox)??

Yes, it would do a complete cleanup on the box, and so reset the password. But beware, everything else is gone as well!! Like you said, the complete /var is cleaned.

Thanks for the method for resetting the password
But when I arrive in the folder /var/etc/passwd with tuxbox commander i could'nt edit anything
It's written that 4 is for editing but nothing occurs
And what about the default password was it dreambox or another one cause for the moment no access from the pc
