no i dont think its the same system, and even if it was then foxtel / optus could ping your box and catch you stealing their signals.
You can get foxtel/optus tv via a pc tv card + pc and a decoder program though.... from what i have seen the optus program decoder is heaps better than the foxtel one.
im not sure of the risks with this method.

A goldcard wont work in a cable box.

You need to mod the box in a cable situation.

If its a subscriber box I wouldnt go playing around with the insides

Me neither. Never heard of pinging. Can't say I've had much experience with the F*xtel cable box but I know some people with Opt*s cable boxes who have had them for quite some time now with no known problems. I might be wrong in saying this but even though cable is duplex, I don't think the box actually sends info back to the provider. Or if it does, it can be disabled. Like I said I'm not 100% sure on this so don't slay me if I'm wrong!

I think the pinging really only applies to people who reconnect a disconnected cable service not those who already have a legit box up and running.
I read about a guy in the usa being "pinged" (not the correct term) and getting caught because he only had cable internet and not a cable tv decoder and they figured out what he was up to because his connection wasnt terminated.
although im no expert, sat-indusrty really needs a cable forum to attract some experts
