Hello !
Im also new to this, but had a similar problem with a 80 gb hd in my DB.
I started with a 40 gb, and that went fine, but I couldent get my new on to work.
It ended up with this to get the disk to work.
Startup with the original DB image, and go to the disk manager. Setup the disk, initialize it, and format the disk. When this is done correctly you will see the disk displayed ok. Then format the disk.
Now starup in the Hydra image and it will work and function correctly.
I know that you havent wrote that you have the Hydra image, and you havent told anything about problems with initializing the disk, so it just took my own problems and described them.
My setup, DB7000, Org image on fllash, and newest Hydra on USB, and a 80 Travelstar 2,5" disk.
I hope it might help you.
If it dont,I think you should describe your setup here, DB model, Image, USB disk .....etc. then its easier for others to help you, ok ?
