What is U-Boot?

I notice when you download and unpack official images from the ITGATE site, you get 2 files inside. The image file (.img) generally around 8meg and you also get a U-Boot file (.img).

When flashing via serial i notice it says U-Boot 1.1.2 (Tuxbox) (Jun 28 2007 - 17.11.05) on the top of the tv.

But what do i do with this file, as it is not mentioned on the official ITGATE how to page?

Should i load it first, then load the 8mg image????
or just not worry about it?
