Subtitles on IR-ACE and 5400Z

I have turned on subtitles for channel 7, and the ABC and now cannot turn them off. Any ideas ?
I have done this with my Humax IR-ACE by going Opt, Down Arrow, Left Arrow, OK. Supposed to be able to turn them off with Opt, Down Arrow, Left Arrow, Exit. Didn't work. The book says that you select the language for subtitles to turn off then Exit. It doesn't seem to select the only language "eng" to allow you to turn it off.
Last night I turned on subtitles on my Dads 5400 and also can't turn them off.
I'm obviously missing something really stupid. What is it ? Or is this a feature of all Humax's, you can turn subtitles on, but not off ?
Help please, wife is a tad upset that I've stuffed up another perfectly working piece of gear by fiddling.

Thought it was just me that fiddled with stuff that works to find i stuffed it up! I dont have one of these boxes any more and cant find the old instructions, the only thing that i can suggest from using these boxes is to press ok before exiting as i made that mistake in manual search mode or restore factory settings. Keep fiddling.
