Strong Static

G'day,

I have a Strong 4890 with hard disk and it produces so much static it's absurd and I fear to plug it into my tv.

What can I do to reduce this? I am unsure if it is static or voltage leak - either way it is a huge worry. Or it is?

Thanks.

Hi....
You can buy larger ferrite beads from many electronics components shops... The idea is the same theory as the ferrite bead presently installed on your computer monitor leads (The plastic shell bump on the outside of your monitor lead is a ferrite bead). You just wind the coax and power leads on your receiver (Set top box) through the ferrite bead core several times and, hopefully, the noise/static will disappear. If you can't buy a ferrite bead the right size to allow you to wind the power cords and the input and output coax leads from your digital satellite receiver (separate beads for each lead), a ferrite toroid core used for winding baluns or power transformers will do very well, if not better.... The theory is to alter or detune the resonant frequency of the various leads to and from your digital satellite receiver so they don't act as antennae or aerials transmitting the noise generated by the satellite receiver into the surrounding area to be picked up by the TV etc.. Keeping all leads as short as possible works too and for the same reason. Keep them physically away from the TV antenna too.

Another good trick is to keep the satellite receiver physically as far away from your TV as reasonably possible. Sitting it on top of the TV is an invitation for the TV to pick up the random radio frequency noise generated by the time base oscillators and switching logic in the satellite receiver. Some cheaper TV's are very poor at separating or disciminating/rejecting random noise from the environment..

Depending on the receiver quality of your TV, either one or both of the above fixes should work, separately or together... Don't be fooled by wellknown TV brand names.... Experiment with other TV's too.
None of the above involve any active interference with your equipment as they are passive add-ons to the outside of everything. You will not need to open your box or TV with a screwdriver or interfere with them in any way.
Regards,
