Dish 500, good for FTA?

I purchased a Dish 500 which was advertised as 'perfect for FTA' usage on EB*Y. However, after installation and several attempts to lock to a transponder without success, I've recently read that you must have atleast a 76cm dish for Ku Band FTA. Am I stuck in the Mud? I also have a spare Dish Network SuperDish (HD) which is about 76cm wide and 57cm tall. Could this be used? With the dual legacy Dish 500 LNB? Thanks for any info.
