Unhappy 7020 drops Ethernet link at boot

I have a problem that my 7020 loses the Ethernet connection during boot, the internal led goes on briefly a couple of times and then goes out (Ethernet hardware turns off). It have worked perfectly for a couple of weeks with the same equipment (Netgear router). What can be the cause of this ?

A workaround is: If I unplug the Ethernet cable, then power on and boot up the DB and then plug the cable back in (with a static IP setting) then Ethernet goes on and everything works. But it's very annoying to have to do this unplug operation upon every restart.

I noticed if I connect the DB using a crossover cable to a single computer then the ethernet hw stays active throughout the bootup sequence.

So connected to the router; is it colliding with something and is backing off or what?, DHCP doesn't seem to work either but does with the PC's I have towards that router. So I use a static setting for now in perfect concertation with other addresses and correct net mask. I can't figure out what the problem would be. Even if I remove any other unit from the router I get the same behaviour and on any of the router ports. I haven't yet tried with another router, it used to work well before and still does with a 500S.
Is it possiby a HW fault so I should return it for repair ?
I have tried reflashing everything with Dreamup and original image and still the same problem.
Is there something you can advice for getting better diagnostics on what's happening when the ethernet goes off ?

I had the same problem. What I did was connect the dreambox to a cheap 10/100 hub then through my netgear router to my pc. For some reason this works perfectly and now I never lose my connection. Don't know why this should work but it does

7020 drops ethernet link

i've got a similar problem;

After upgrading my dreambox 7020 to the latest original firmware (12-09-2005) i have stability problems with my ethernet interface.
so i decided to flash an earlier version : 22-05-2005 but i've still problems.

When i boot my dreambox with DHCP i don't get valid IP-settings.
So i use a fixed ip-adress instead. But now it happens that the connection drops while transferring files to my dreambox. sometimes when i boot my dreambox i have got no connection at all.

My 7020 is connected to a switch. The switch is connected to my modem/router (Netgear) All other network devices are working great and they have a working connections with DHCP assigned ip-adresses...

Re: 7020 drops Ethernet link at boot

I am experiencing the same (or at least similar) problem. My equipment is a Dbox 7020 and a D-Link 624.
I doubt it is a hw problem even though it looks like it. For me, all started when I moved to the latest Gemini image (2.20). If there are more people with this problem, then I would like to know what image you are using.
Problem description
-----------------------
DHCP works lousy... when I force the box into boot mode (by holding arrow down and turning on power) then DHCP works like a charm... everything ok... But when I boot normally, the DHCP client is only successful 1 out of hundred times...
So, then I tried static IP adress... it works better but still not good. The Ethernet connection drops anyway (seen by the green LED indicating Link established on the Ethernet board)...
Since my box worked without problems with an old image (Nordic), I am considering to downgrade...

Re: 7020 drops Ethernet link at boot

I have the same problem with the ethernet connection dropping. It only happens with the netgear router, never with the cross over cable direct to my pc. Because of this I though it was the router but maybe it is the image. I am also using Gemini 2.2 Do you know if the Gemini 2.4 is any better?

I tested with Gemini 2.4 yesterday and it doesn't work better... It is the same behaviour.

Have you a CAM in CI? Remove and prove it!

(In another board say: "Gemini Team has now made a script that updates the Kernel")
Regards.

*Solution for the bad/poor network chip in the 7020 model*

I've heard of an guy in germany that hooked up the 7020 against a manageable Cisco switch and runned a "benchmark" on it with horrible result. Huge packet loss!
The new upcoming DM-models uses a Realtek network chip instead of this crappy one so this will be history soon...
But thats not what this "solution" is about...

Found this tip on a Swedish forum. Please confirm that I'm right or wrong!
  • Turn off the 7020.
  • Hold the downkey as you normaly do when you put the box in flashmode with the onboard boot-rom.
  • Use TELNET to the box IP and violá, there are settings for the network card among other BIOS-lookalike-settings! Remove it from the auto setting and lock it in the 100Mbit FD-mode (full duplex) and give it a try.
If that don't do it, lock it in the 100Mbit HD-mode (half-duplex).
This should help alot or am I dreaming?

/Pelle

Re: 7020 drops Ethernet link at boot

Dear friends,

I visit the forum everyday but usually I do not post.

Because I have solved many problems using your solutions, I feel that I have to pass to you how I have solved above problem.

I have 2 DM7020S connected through router to my ISP with ADSL 512. Now they are working like a charm.

I have made 2 changes.
1. Change of the router. Now I am using a lynksys.
2. I have uploaded the image (Gemini 2.20) with Latest Dreamup through serial port instead of through browser. (Note:I was using the same image - same file - and I had problem)

I believe that the way of uploading solved the problem and not the router.

Anyway, give it a try and I hope you will solve the problem.

Good Luck

Dinos

Guys, I did that and it didn't work well, the network connection was still unstable. Now, when I tried 10 Full Duplex, the network interface stopped completely. I did a factory reset but neither that woke the network up. How can I reset to the old automatic setting without any network???
Please help...
