Post 5620 - Booting from [S1] Serial Port 1...

Hi fellas
I am having an idea. If you connect the DB with serial and than hyperterminal it, and when you restart the DB and hit "Enter" as soon as the DB restarts you get the Device Configuration which should look like:

Device Configuration ---
Power-On Test Devices:
000 Enabled System Memory [RAM]
002 Disabled Ethernet [ENET]
----------------------------
Boot Sources:
001 Enabled Application in Flash [FLASH]
002 Disabled Ethernet [ENET]
local=192.168.1.5 remote=192.168.1.2 hwaddr=0009341e97b5
003 Disabled Serial Port 1 [S1]
Baud = 115200
----------------------------
Automatic Boot: Enabled
----------------------------
1 - Toggle Power-On Tests
2 - Change a Boot Device
3 - Change IP Addresses
4 - Ping test
5 - Change Baud Rate for S1 Boot
7 - Toggle Automatic Boot
D - Display Configuration
S - Save Changes
0 - Exit Menu and Boot Application

And if you type 2

==== ENABLE A BOOT DEVICE ====
Boot Sources:
001 Enabled Application in Flash [FLASH]
002 Disabled Ethernet [ENET]
local=192.168.1.5 remote=192.168.1.2 hwaddr=0009341e97b5
003 Disabled Serial Port 1 [S1]
Baud = 115200

So I was thinking since my DB cannot boot by itself maybe I can choose the third option "003 Disabled Serial Port 1 [S1]"
and try to boot it by sending the flash manually.

I choosed the third option but when I restart I get this message:

System RAM check complete
Booting from [S1] Serial Port 1...

PLEASE NOTE: You must now...

a. Exit from terminal emulation mode

b. Modify the baud rate of your host session to 115200

c. Transmit a file to the target using kermit

d. Reset the host baud rate to 9600

e. Reenter terminal emulation mode

f. Hit enter to continue

Now I am not sure what to do next...

Any hints,

Best Regards,
Crea

@creative_78
I have posted our problem to dream-multimedia and they got back to me with the statment:
the bootloader is crashed,
contact your dealer
P.S. I sent them my bootlog, which is the same with yours
As for your tries to boot from COM1, I thought and tried previuosly, but I didn't knew what to send and how to send.
If you find sth, please let me know.
Cheers!

Hi fellas !
I am still going on.

I set the boot device on the Serial port (S1) as told.
I flashed an image using Kermit and the image was sent.
(it took me like 40 min but what the hell !)
And still nothing.

Than I renamed the image in my PC from ****.img to root.cramfs
and than I sent it to my DB by the previous procedure.
I was thinking that the root.cramfs would explode itself next time DB started and maybe the DB would restart.

But it didn't happen.
Maybe I did smth wrong?
Or it's just that the DB won't start whatever effort I make?
I hope it's not the second.

PS to albsky (keta legenat me duket se s'marrin vesh fare per problemet serioze dhe merren vetem me traplliqet)

Best Regards,
Crea

Unfortunately it's a bit more complicated but it works more or less as follows:

You need to send an unpacked image to the box! The image (which it is actually no more but rather the OS) is stored to the RAM and not the flash! When you take power off the box the OS is gone!
Got it? It only boots it as if it came from flash.
This function was created to test "images" without having to flash it to the box everytime. Make some changes and boot from PC via network (COM port is by far too slow)

Hi Raph4el!

I didn't get it right! Please try to be more specific !!!
By unpacked image you mean smth.img ?
And are you saying that when I send a file *.img to the DB, it will be deleted when I switch off ? (I know that RAM is temporary memory)
But I thought the info was stored in some kind of chip.

I would like to connect by lan.
And I tried to boot from network but I cannot get a connection between them. By the way I did set the IP to the DB.
Exactly 192.168.1.5 (my PC is 192.168.1.2)
I also enabled network as booting device.
I use SmartFTP to transfer. (I have tried also some others)

Can you tell me smth more?

Looks like you are the only one interested int this topic
(or the only one who understands - no offense for other members)

Best Regards,
Crea

Booting doesn't mean storing! The place your boot files are stored in this case is the HDD of your PC.
Instead of booting from the Flash (and then unpacking the image into RAM) the files are loaded from your PC via network cable (already unpacked).

When you switch your Dreambox off you will looses these files in the Dreambox because RAM is fluctuent!

Like I said, this method is used for development purposes when a developer boots (loads) the Dreambox via network which enables him to do quick changes to the operasting system without packing an image all the time!

Yes Raph4el !

I got that.

The problem is I cannot connet through network, even if I have specified an IP to the DB. I am sure the cable works, also my PC port because I do connect with another DB.

Any suggestions
(I hope I am not bothering you)

And by the way I was thinking.
Booting from Com1 Or Net would have the same effect on the DB.
So I am sure that the boot is done beacuse when I transfer the img by kermit the process finishes Ok. Doesn't that mean that my dreambox should be resseted (should be Ok)?
I mean doing this procedure without switching off thd DB or press flash erase (the upp button) .
Instead the message on the DB remains the same "5600 boot".
Normally it should dissapear, and come to the"----"

What about that ?
