Hi! I have been testing several images for the DM500S and I wanted to share comments and reomendations with other people's experience.
Images tested in this order:
- pli-500-2808
- hydra500_b1
- sf_img_106_1009
- I-have-a-dreambox 0.1
pli-500:
( + ) Very nice setup, fast Sat scan, good audio option, good emu, seems stable.
( - ) Limited download options for a new user, older emu.
hydra500:
( + ) Nice setup, fast Sat scan, newer emu, many options to download, seems a good choice. Good support.
( - ) No audio button!, dowloads could crash the system, skin 16:9 crash the system, seems unstable for newbies.
sf_img:
( + ) Nice setup, but slow Sat scan in Astra, good emus, good download options, good skins, best audio button option. Good support.
( - ) Game like tetris and lemmings are installed but do not appear on menu.
I ended up using the last image from SF. I am very happy with it besides the problem switching channels ( I was able to fix the problem by http). Probably I don't have enough experience for the hydra image or I did something wrong but I did erase before flashing.
Do you have other experience with these or other images? Any recomendation? Thanks.
Update:
I have tested I-Have-a-dreambox 0.1 now so I will add it to the list. Also SF now has the latest emu, you can download newer versions. Also SF is now stable, it was a problem with the channel list. If you delete some channels (like radios) then it tries to update as you zap and it slows down zapping and seems to crash or stop working while its doing the update. Probably some of my problems with Hydra B1 were also related to my inexperience with the box.
IHAD:
( + ) Good emus (all in one in version 0.2), good skins with 16:9, good audio button option. Seems stable.
( - ) Could not finnish Astra scan during initial setup, worked manually selecting another TP. Few options to download like PLi. Incomplete translation.
Update 2:
Revisited Hydra B1 and seems great now that I know a little more about images after good experience with SF image. Just need to make sure you don't load too many addons and plugins to /var (check often with df -h). If you see there is no space, delete some emus you don't need or keys not used. Also as a last resort you can delete satellites.xml but you will lose the option of scanning or adding new channels (SF did a good job with that freeing /var).

Works well for me. There was a little quirk where you have to comment out 2 lines in the:
/var/etc/radegast.cfg
#ecm flood lock = 5
#ecm flood release = 200
and change this line to say:
descr mode = v3api
I recall it says = file in image.
This will get u out of trouble with this image

manually download the packages from the URL's listed in cpanel.xml, study the cpanel.xlm where the packages should go (target)
Then use a ftp proggie to copy the packages to a /tmp and telnet to the dreambox;
cd /
gzip -dc /tmp/<package-name> | tar xf -
in this way you also have to manually change your smartcam config file (in /var/etc)
