Thanks ZBEE & pamela....

Just one question....

Is a "rs232 crossover cable" a normal modem cable or is it a null modem cable, or something else?

Unfortunately I dont have a "rs232 crossover cable" so I used the DreamUpLAN program, instead of the dreamUp one and thats how I ended up here.

Thanks for the quick response too and will follow exactly as explained.....

Regards
JoeBlow251

thats the disadvantage of only usin lan...a null modem is essential as if a flash goes wrong you cant talk to the box via lan....you may be lucky as ive been that when dreamup has the ip config still and the box has retained it you can still flash...but no guarantess...as i said "null modem is a must to have"
cheers

When using DreamUP, through a LAN, how long should one wait for DreamUp to connect to the box? I'm trying to send Traveller (the file Mr B was kind enough to post) to my DB and not having much success. I've tried using DreamUpLAN (the slow way), but wasn't able to send the Traveller file. So then, after reading a post from Mr B (http://sat-industry.net/forums/showt...&threadid=3731) about using DreamUp with Network connect, decided to give that a go. No, I've not hooked up a Com connection as well. Should I??? I thought the connection would be either, but not both???

With DreamUp, I did what it instructed at http://www.dm7000.de/ ........vis. Remove mains power from DB; click Connect; reconnect mains power.

The status showing in DreamUp window is:
"connection prepared - now switch on dreambox!"

Nothing has happened for 20 minutes at least.

My Dreambox is not visible on my Network Neighborhood, but I can ping the DB from Command and I get a response. I can FTP to the box; actually have sent the Satellites.xml file to it succesfully. How do I know it was succesful?? When I go to setup and check for Sats, Optus sats are the list. I can even browse the Dreambox using the Web Interface. There's something I'm not doing right, but it has me beat what!!!

One other question, does the Traveller I d/l need to be renamed to flashimg.img, which is the current file name in /var/tmp dir on my DB? Currently, the file is named emu_beta105_5.5+gbox+keyupdate-Traveller-20030622.img

I'm trying, but not with a lot of success at the moment!!

Question arises if right cable (Nullmodem cable) was used.

You can only see the Dreambox in Netwoek Neighbourhood if Samba server is running on Dreambox because of the protocol.

No.... flashimage img is a temporary dump you must have initiated from the Traveller extras menu and is normally used for flashupdates via internal flashing! You can savely delete this file (will be deleted anyways on reboot).

If you want to update (flash) the Traveller image internally (can only be done from Traveller to Traveller and not from say Ronaldd to Traveller) you need to rename the emu_beta105_5.5+gbox+keyupdate-Traveller-20030622.img
to flashimage.img and FTP it to the /var/tmp/ directory, them goto the menus extra menu and select "Write Image to Flash"... now be patient and wait until the Dreambox tells you that it's done and needs to reboot!

Try it

Thanx Mr B

I haven't hooked up via the com port, only via my LAN. I guess that's one of my questions........do you need to have both - com and ethernet - or can it be one or the other?? I've read the posts about the com connection giving ability to fix up a bootloader issue and understand this could be important if the bootloader needs fixing, but at this stage, I've not stuffed that up (and all going well, I won't!!). Is LAN connection alone not possible for updating Images??

Cool, so to see the DB on my network I need Samba installed. Well, it's not that I want to see it, just thought it would appear there. if it's not there, I'm not worried.

On the Traveller part, now I'm a little confussed. I'm actually trying to install Traveller. What's installed by default??

I do not have Menus Extra on my DB at this point. I presume this is one of the Traveller add ons??

As MrB pointed out you need either a null modem cable or both a null modem cable and LAN connection to use DreamUp.

If you use both connections your flashing process will be alot faster.

As far as renaming the img is concerned, if you are using DreamUp you do not need to FTP anything nor rename anything. DreamUp takes care of the transfering a flashing for you.

The FTPing and renaming is really only applicable if you want to do it manually.

The box comes pre packaged with an official Dream Multimedia firmware release. The Traveller image and any other image for that matter can be downloaded from many places.

Take a look at www.dreambox.net.au and you will find a number of different firmware downloads to play with.

Thanx Xphile.........

I already have the latest Traveller image, that's what I'm trying to load on to my box.

Mr B didn't actually point out how the PC connection should be made to the DB, but he did raise the question about having the right null modem cable. BTW, is this the same a a "laplink" cable?? Anyway, you have pointed it out and now I know there needs to be the com connection to update the Image. So, here I go again with another attempt.
