anyway to turn off the hdd?

I run all my images from the hdd. The only problem is that it does get hot every now and again and although it doesnt effect anything, when i reboot i get alot of clicking and i have to power down, leave it for a few mins to cool and then turn on.

Ive tried with the hdd powerdown settings but nothing seems to work, it powers down and then powers straight back up. Im guessing this is because its reading from the hdd, but is there anyway to sort of put it into standby and have the hdd totally stop? to save it overheating?

Yo Guys,

It is logical.

When ever the memory is full and the db wants to swap is will swap to your HDD. So in theory your HDD will be spinning up every time. If you're lucky the box won't freeze, but most of the time it will.

Also the HDD will be growing old very fast. Within 2 years your drive will be dead. That's the reason to buy a usb memory stick. And move the var to the usb. Also a lot faster and more silence. (faster than spinning up)

Continuing this theory if one install a CF card / USB stick and configure a swapfile on it - the HDD will no more have a reason to spin up! I have no HDD in my DM7000 only CF. I use CIFS for recording to my PC.
Maybe somebody will give a go for this suggestion and report us back here.

Sure.
My HDD only spins when I boot, when I record or read a file. When any of those activities ends my HDD stops to spin after 2 minutes.
