I guess the tuner only makes a difference with some weak transponders... it has been confirmed by several people. With the SF image and DM500S you can actually record without problems using NGrab.
If you need a harddrive today the only choice is DM7000, agree.

On paper the dm500 indeed has a better tuner, but I haven't been able to see _any_ difference in SNR. If you do see difference, I suspect your dish or lnb's aren't positioned optimally.
The dm7020 will take another few months to be available, I assume. Please note you cannot run dm7000 images on a dm7020, so expect immature images for it (bugs, less functionality). So imho it's still safest to buy a dm7000.
